Robert E. Welu, 74, of 970 Davis Ave., died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association and the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Welu worked for H&W Motor Express for 30 years before his retirement.

He was born on June 1, 1928, in Dubuque, son of Ray and Marie (Fluhr) Welu.

Bob married Jeanette Herbst in 1958, at Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle, Iowa. Bob and Jeanette have been members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He graduated from the former Loras Academy as a young man before joining the Air Force and proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

Bob, also known as Papa Bear to his family and friends, was a great Cubs fan and a loyal member of the East Dubuque Bears Fan Club. He enjoyed bowling and golfing and was always ready for a good game of cards with his friends.

Bob always seemed to be around when someone needed a helping hand. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette (Herbst) Welu; a son, Jon Welu, of East Dubuque, Ill.; a daughter: Paula (Rick) Welu-Jacobs, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Ryan, Rena, Payton and Katelyn Welu; three brothers, twin brother, Bill Welu, and Jim (Jackie) Welu and T.J. (Carole) Welu, all of Dubuque; two sisters, Marym Danzer and Adele (Ding) Palmer, of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Dottie Welu-Breitbach, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jack Welu.

A Robert E. Welu Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Dr. Schmid, Dr. Payne, Dr. Lally, Mercy Medical Center nursing staff and everyone at Hospice of Dubuque.
