The Rev. Justin A. Kane, 85, of Villa Raphael, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church, with the Most Rev. Jerome Hanus, OSB, presiding. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1917, in Shullsburg, Wis., son of Joseph and Grace (McCarthy) Kane.

He graduated from Columbia Academy, Loras College, in 1939, and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore.

He was ordained a priest on May 6, 1944. He first served two temporary assignments, Sacred Heart Church in Fillmore, Iowa, and then Holy Name in West Union, Iowa. He then served at St. Joseph's Church in Waterloo, Iowa, and St. Mary's in Waverly, Iowa. He also was a chaplain at the hospital in Waverly. He then served at St. Patrick's in Dubuque, and taught religion at the former St. Joseph Academy in Dubuque.

After serving as a Navy chaplain attached to the Marine Corps in Korea, from 1951 to 1957, he served at St. Joseph's in Marion, Iowa; Sacred Heart in Monticello, Iowa; St. Patrick's in Britt, Iowa; St. Mary's in McGregor, Iowa; St. Mary's in Lamont, Iowa; and St. Mark's in Iowa Falls. After he retired, he went to Waterloo, and helped at St. Edward's and Sacred Heart.

Surviving is a brother, Jim (Marge) Kane, of Dubuque; four nephews, Brian (Kathy) Kane, Shaun (Jill) Kane, Mike (Sue) Kane and Tim (Carol) Kane; a niece, Kelley Ann (Ward) Symons; and 17 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Joseph, at age 31/2.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rev. Justin A. Kane Memorial Fund.
