John M. "Maurie" Collins, 85, of 2044 Jackson St., died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church, 1584 White St. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on July 10, 1917, in Dubuque, son of John C. and Catherine (Mahoney) Collins. He married Catherine H. "Kay" Kretz on May 17, 1944, at Nativity Catholic Church.

He was a graduate of Columbia Academy and attended Columbia College. He served with the Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.

Maurie and his family moved to Clinton, Iowa, in 1959 where he managed the J&P Shoe Store for 13 years. After moving back to Dubuque, he was employed with the Arenz Shoe Store until his retirement after 50 years in the shoe business.

He was a member of St. Mary's Parish, Dubuque, and the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque.

Maurie and Kay enjoyed traveling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine H. "Kay" Collins; two daughters, Maura J. Collins, of St. Louis, and Colleen M. (Tim) Jarman, of Sioux City, Iowa; five sons, Michael J. Collins, Kevin J. Collins and Brian D. (Dee) Collins, all of Dubuque, Dennis P. (Judy) Collins, of Waconia, Minn., and Timothy J. Collins, of San Rafael, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Maureen and Patrick Collins, Katie, John and Emily Jarman and Carrie and Theresa Collins; and a brother, Bernie (Ann) Collins, of Peoria, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Collins, and a sister in infancy.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Church, 1584 White St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Schreiber and his staff and the nurses and staff of ManorCare for their care and concern for Maurie.
