Diane J. Nauman

Diane J. Nauman, 56, of 725 Groveland Place, died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, surrounded by her family, with her mother, Joyce, and her sisters, Linda, Sue and Kelly, and her brother, Tom, and his wife, Sharon, due to complications from breast and liver cancers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Don Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. To celebrate Diane's life, friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1954, in Dubuque, daughter of Delbert W. and Joyce A. (Budde) Kramer. Diane attended school in Dubuque and earned her licensed practical nurse's degree from Northeast Iowa Community College.

She married Russell Nauman on Nov. 10, 1973, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill.

Diane was employed by the Sisters of Charity at Mount Carmel for more than 26 years. In addition, Diane pleased many people by baking and decorating cakes for more than 30 years. She was affectionately known as "the Cake Lady" because of her Cakes by Diane business.

For those who knew Diane, she never harbored any ill will toward anyone and seldom, if ever, had even a sharp or unkind word to say.

Diane was a multitalented person. In addition to baking and decorating cakes, she sewed clothes and did alterations for her family and every size doll. She knitted, tatted, laced, quilted, created stained-glass objects, stepping stones and was working on mastering calligraphy.

Diane, being the caring person that she was, donated her eyes to research at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Surviving are her husband, Russell D. Nauman, of Dubuque; two sons, Tom (Laura) Nauman, of Madison, Wis., and David (Angela) Nauman, of Sherrill, Iowa; a grandson, Dominick David Nauman; her mother, Joyce A. Kramer, of Dubuque; four sisters, Linda R. (Dan) Freiburger, of Peosta, Iowa, Sue H. (Dan) Habel, of Sherrill, Mary Jane Kramer and Kelly S. (Bill) Kauffmann, both of Dubuque; and a brother, Thomas M. (Sharon) Kramer, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her father, Delbert W. Kramer; and her father-and mother-in-law, Donald R. and Marjorie M. Nauman.

A Diane J. Nauman Memorial Fund has been established.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.behrfuneralhome.com.

Diane's family would like to thank all of the doctors and staff who were involved in Diane's care.
