Herbert O. Lindsay, Jr.

Herbert O. "Herb" Lindsay, Jr., 46, of 1108 Lincoln Ave., died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at home, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2025 Jackson St. Burial will be in the Council Hill (IL.) Cemetery. Visitation was held on March 10 at Hoffmann, Schneider and Kitchen Funeral home, 3860 Asbury Road. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. today at the church.

Mr. Lindsay was a self-employed floor mechanic at Lindsay Flooring.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1959, in Jacksonville, IL., son of Herbert and Delores (Strubbe) Lindsay. He married Joan Rettenmaier on July 19, 1986, in Dubuque.

He graduated from the Elizabeth (IL.) High School in 1977, and Nashville Auto Diesel Mechanic College in 1979. He was a qualified locksmith.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

He loved to cook. He enjoyed working with his hands doing woodworking and general construction.

Herb was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin. He was a workaholic, always willing to help everyone. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Joan (Rettenmaier) Lindsay, of Dubuque; two sons, Evan S. Lindsay and Nicholas A. Lindsay, both at home; his mother, Delores (Strubbe) Lindsay, of Dubuque; two sisters, Pamela (Mark) VanCamp, of Kaukauna, Wis., and Judee (Thomas) Townsend, of Scales Mound, IL.; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Lindsay, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; his mother and father-in-law, John and Marcia Rettenmaier; a brother-in-law, Jeff Pfile; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and godchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert O. Lindsay, in 1993; a sister, Melody (Lindsay) Pfile, in 2004; a nephew, Andrew Cullen; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Ruth Strubbe; his paternal grandfather, Orris Lindsay; and his special 100-year-old great-grandmother, Irene Moody.
