Leonard L. Rhomberg, Sr.

Leonard L. Rhomberg, Sr., 81, of 1223 Rhomberg Ave., died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Marine Corps League. A visitation was held on Dec. 19, at Hoffmann, Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there was a wake service at 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Rhomberg worked for FDL for more than 20 years, until his retirement in 1982.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1924, in Dubuque, son of Fred and Mary (Pribyl) Rhomberg. He married Veronica A. Kremer on Nov. 29, 1947, in St. Donatus, Iowa.

He served in the Air Force from 1945 to 1947.

He was a dedicated husband and passionate about his family. He filled his family's hearts with laughter and joy. He was an infamous storyteller and always had a "good" joke. He had a passion for turning trash into treasure. If you stopped by the house, he always had something to give you. If you needed something, it was likely he had "one" out in the garage. If he couldn't fix it, "it was a piece of junk anyway." He also enjoyed playing cards, his hand and everyone else's.

Surviving are his wife, Veronica Rhomberg, of Dubuque; two daughters, Bev (Mark) Behnke, of Sherrill, Iowa, and Rhonda Rhomberg, of Dubuque; three sons, Leonard (Bonnie) Rhomberg, Jr., of Anamosa, Iowa, Kevin (Denice) Rhomberg, of Concord, Ohio, and Fred (Lisa) Rhomberg, of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren, Lee Ann Hefel, Mike and Marc Hanson, Katie, Kelli and Kyle Behnke, Nicole Wahlert, Leonard Rhomberg III, Jody Pannozzo, Tricia Pozsgai, Kevin Joe and Natalee Rhomberg, Jamie Burger, Jessie Rhomberg, Spencer, Rahni Kay and Sammy David, Matthew and Nicholas Rhomberg and one on the way; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosemary Kremer, of LaMotte, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Rhomberg, of LaMotte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis "Stubby" Rhomberg, on Aug. 28, 2001; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Raymond and Alfred Rhomberg; a son-in-law, Terry L. Hanson; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Kremer; and a sister-in-law, Martha Rhomberg.

A very special thank-you to Leonard's "personal nurse," granddaughter, Jamie Burger, who cared for him with much love and dedication. Also, thanks to Barb and Kim for their kindness.
