Dennis James "Stubby" Rhomberg, 43, of Dubuque, was pronounced dead at 11:13 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in rural East Dubuque, IL.

Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Rhomberg worked as a self employed logger and was a timber buyer in the Dubuque area.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1957, in Dubuque, son of Leonard Sr. and Veronica (Kremer) Rhomberg.

He attended Hempstead High School.

Surviving are a daughter, Jamie (Randy) Burger, of Dubuque; a son, Jesse Rhomberg, of East Dubuque; his parents, Leonard Sr. and Veronica Rhomberg, of Dubuque; two sisters, Beverly (Mark) Behnke, of Sherrill, Iowa, and Rhonda Rhomberg, of Dubuque; three brothers, Leonard Jr. (Bonnie) Rhomberg, of Anamosa, Iowa, Kevin (Denice) Rhomberg, of Mentor, Ohio, and Fred Rhomberg, of Dubuque; and his former wives, Betty Lux, of Dubuque, and Rhonda Hoftender, of East Dubuque.

Police: Dubuque man's body found on U.S. in Illinois

MENOMINEE, IL. -- The body found near the Little Menominee River Bridge on U.S. 20 Tuesday morning has been identified as that of a Dubuque man.

Dennis J. Rhomberg, 43, was found dead by construction workers at 11:13 a.m. at the bridge, according to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Steve Allendorf said Jo Daviess County is being assisted by the Illinois State Police and Dubuque police and sheriff's departments. Wednesday, Allendorf said investigators were interviewing individuals who knew Rhomberg to try to determine what happened prior to his death.

An autopsy will be conducted this morning to determine the cause of death, Allendorf said.

Autopsy: Man fell to his death

GALENA, IL. -- Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Dennis J. Rhomberg, 43, of Dubuque, fell to his death from the top of the Little Menominee River bridge on U.S. 20, according to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office.

Rhomberg's body was found Tuesday at 11:13 a.m. by construction workers.

"We are speculating that, in all probability, this was an accident, but we're not prepared to make a final determination," said Jo Daviess County Sheriff Steve Allendorf. He said the death remains under investigation and that investigators are awaiting pathology and toxicology reports. Usually, those reports take about two weeks to complete.

Allendorf said Rhomberg left on foot from the apartment of a friend who lives nearby sometime after midnight Monday.

The sheriff's office would like anyone who traveled through the area between 1 and 3 a.m. Tuesday and might have seen Rhomberg walking along the roadway, to call the office at 815/777-2141 or 800/373-7838.
