Max Rettenberger

Max Rettenberger, 76, of 5200 Old Highway Road, died at 8:15 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Veterans Facility in Knoxville, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m., and a rosary by the Knights of Columbus 5513, of Peosta, Iowa, at 7 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1928, in Dubuque, son of Wendelin and Thekla (Stegmayer) Rettenberger. He married Madonna Goetzinger on Aug. 11, 1951, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Max was a self-made man and was involved in many Dubuque business ventures, including working at the former Rettenberger Nursery, farming. He owned and operated Rettenberger Mobil and Rettenberger DX service stations at 90 S. Locust and on Dodge Street for more than 30 years. He also sold and serviced RVs, toppers and hitches and sold Christmas trees.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5513, of Peosta, where he formerly served as Grand Knight, and held many other offices. He also was a Red Cross Blood donor.

Surviving are his wife, Madonna; three sons, Mark (Doreen) Rettenberger, of Durango, Iowa, and Mike (Jolene) Rettenberger and Marty (Julie) Rettenberger, both of Dubuque; four daughters, Melinda Rettenberger and Mary Rettenberger, both of Dubuque, Michele (Russell) Ryan, of Zwingle, Iowa, and Maureen (Doug Behnke) Kleiner, of Peosta; 13 grandchildren; and a sister, Lora E. Burkem, of Pittsburgh.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Merle, in 1962; four sisters, Hellen, Rose, Dora and Thekla; and three brothers, Julius, Karl and Wendelin, Jr.
