Mrs. L.W. "Pete" (Marie A. "Van") Tarkett, 88, of Luther Manor, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose St., with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born on April 17, 1915, in Dubuque, daughter of Frank and Mayme (Thomas) VanDuelman. She married LaVerne W. "Pete" Tarkett on June 1, 1937; he died on Dec. 11, 1975.

Marie was a graduate of the former Immaculate Conception Academy, class of 1933. She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and Rosary Society and was a volunteer at Stonehill Care Center. She was an active leader in Girl Scouting for many years and was a member of the Xavier Guild for more than 30 years.

Marie excelled for her basketball and softball teams in high school and beyond. She was an avid fan and supporter of her grandchildren's sporting events and never missed a game.

Marie took pride in her yard and her roses and won honors for her peonies. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and was a voracious reader.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann (Robert A.) Ritt, of Dubuque; a son: Thomas F. (Kathryn M. "Kit") Tarkett, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Dr. Ann M. Wellington (Robert H. Pelelo), of Kerrville, Texas, Michele A. Ritt (John J. Rademacher), of Madison, Wis., Robert D. Ritt (fiance, Lisa M. Appel), of East Dubuque, Ill., James R. Ritt (fianc, Christine M. Duehr), of Bloomingdale, Ill., and Jill M. Tarkett, of Galena, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Thomas J. Pelelo, Priya Ritt Rademacher and Josef Ritt Rademacher; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Carl VanDuelman.

A Marie A. Tarkett Memorial Fund has been established in lieu of flowers.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jennifer and Barb, for their care and concern for Marie.
