Mr. Eugene I. Hingtgen, 77, of Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque and Rickardsville, Iowa, died at 12:25 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2003, at the nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a St. Joseph's Catholic Church Parish Christian wake service at 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Hingtgen formerly was employed for 28 years at John Deere Dubuque Works prior to retiring and always cherished the lasting friendships he made while employed there. From 1972-1992, he realized a lifelong dream of raising sheep and living on a farm.

He was born on July 19, 1925, in Bellevue, son of Theodore and Anna (Kramer) Hingtgen. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1943.

He was proud to have served his country in the Navy during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.

He was a devout Catholic and dedicated member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and lector. He also was a member of the Sheep Herders Association in Des Moines for many years and the United Auto Workers Union Local 94.

He was a very loving and dedicated family man who found great joy in surrounding himself with family and friends.

Surviving are three sons, Eugene (Donna) and Ron (Michelle) Hingtgen, both of Dubuque, and Rick (special friend, Diane) Hingtgen, of New Auburn, Wis.; three daughters, Bev (Roger) Datisman, of Eldridge, Iowa, Linda (Tom) Deves, of Evans, Ga., and Mary (fiance, Tom Richmond Jr.) Moldenhauer, of Hanover, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anita (Robert) Skahill, of Dubuque, and Carol (Ken) Neuwohner, of Geneseo, Ill.; and a brother, Donald "Don" Hingtgen, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a brother, Harvey Hingtgen; and a son-in-law, Dan Moldenhauer.

A Eugene I. Hingtgen Memorial Fund has been established by his family.
