Ralph J. Hillard Jr., 69, of 2214 Windsor Ave., died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at home after a long illness.

Services will be at 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with Deacon James Thill officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Hillard was employed early in his career at John C. Kaiser Co. for more than 20 years. He later established his own business, Ralph J. Hillard Jr. Painting & Decorating. He was well-known by many as a master to his craft.

He was born on April 3, 1934, in Dubuque, son of Ralph and Dorothy (Walsh) Hillard.

Surviving are three daughters, Debra (Ken) Kennedy, of Dubuque, Diana (Russell) Hauge, of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Lisa Jackson, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Donna Mae) May; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas 1992; two brothers, Thomas in 1947, and Richard in 1976; and his former wife, Ragna, in 1990.
