Sister Mary Louise (Mary James Louis) Callahan, BVM

Sister Mary Louise (Mary James Louis) Callahan, BVM, 87, of Marian Hall, 1050 Carmel Drive, died at 5:47 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Marian Hall.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Marian Hall Chapel. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Marian Hall, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Mary Louise was an elementary and secondary school teacher in Glendale, Calif., Kansas City, Mo., Chicago and DeKalb, Ill. She initiated and directed a Montessori/Early Childhood Education program at Mount Carmel in Dubuque and St. Louis.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1916, in St. Louis, daughter of James Eugene and Louise Lee (Knapp) Callahan.

She made her first profession of religious vows on March 19, 1937, and her final profession on Aug. 15, 1942.

Surviving are her sisters, Florence Heitert, Margaret Ottoline, Jean Callahan and Patricia Braun, all of St. Louis; a brother, George Callahan, of St. Louis; nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 68 years.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM, Retirement Fund.
