Rita W. Pothoff, 83, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 1790 Alta Place, died at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Stonehill.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Private family visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

She was born on April 8, 1919, in North Buena Vista, Iowa, daughter of John and Christina (Zimmer) Schmidt.

She married John H. Pothoff on Jan. 16, 1940, in North Buena Vista; he died on Jan. 8, 2002. Rita and John farmed together for more than 30 years. After they moved to Dubuque, she worked at Loras College.

Surviving are three sons, Ron (Betty) Pothoff, Alvin (Kathie) Pothoff and Frank (Jayne) Pothoff, all of Dubuque; four daughters, Eileen (Dan) Atchison, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Jan (Jim) Grady, Donna (Al) Less and Sandy (Kevin) Ehlers, all of Dubuque; two sisters, Esther Link, of Dubuque, and Rosina O'Toole, of Davenport, Iowa; a brother, Leonard Schmidt, of Dubuque; 26 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers a Rita W. Pothoff Memorial Fund has been established.
