Esther E. Schardt, 90, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Sunday March 30, 2003, at the care center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church, Dubuque, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on July 2, 1912, in Belmond, Iowa, daughter of the Rev. W.E.F. and Marie (Friesleben) Meier.

She graduated from high school in Manson, Iowa, and is an alumnus of Capital University, Columbus, Ohio.

She married the Rev. Adolph G. Schardt on July 16, 1933, in Manson, Iowa. They resided in Gilmore City, Iowa, from 1933 to 1944. They then moved to Cedar Falls, where Adolph served St. John American Lutheran Church and resided there until 2001, when she moved to Stonehill Care Center.

In addition to being a devoted pastor's wife, she was also a musician and served various charities and was employed in the Cedar Falls school system

Surviving are two children, Carolyn (Rev. Andrew) Oppedahl, of Dubuque, and Joel Schardt, of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Mark Oppedahl, of Dubuque, Nathan Oppedahl, of Minneapolis, Paul (Natalie) Leske Oppedahl, of Eau Claire, Wis., Beth Chaplin, of Dubuque, and Paul Fisher, of Palm Springs, Calif.; three great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, the Rev. Donald Fisher, of Dana Point, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Adolph G. Schardt, in 1992; her parents; a daughter, Lucia Fisher; and a sister, Magdalene Meier.
