Delmont G. Coates, 83, of 2740 Zwingle Court, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Ken Bickel officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

He was born on April 6, 1919, in Dubuque, son of Richard and Gasena (Busch) Coates. He married Dorothy Rupp on Dec. 12, 1940, at Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.

He attended Kemp School, rural Dubuque.

He farmed all his life and truly loved farming. He remained active with farming even after retirement. He also was school director at Kemp's School.

He was a member of Farm Bureau and First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Ron (Julene) Coates, of Dubuque, and Bob (Lisa) Coates, of Maquoketa, Iowa; a daughter, Barbara (Jim) Bushman, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren, Roger Bushman, Dana Rector, and Ryan, Brandon, Adam, Nic, Kendall, Crystal, Callie and Quinn Coates; four great-grandchildren, Kylie, Kendra, Kolton and Kameron; and a daughter-in-law, Sue Coates.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Coates; his parents; and a sister, Lorraine Clapham.

A Delmont G. Coates Memorial Fund has been established.
