Marvin F. Gassman, 68, of 1914 Rhomberg Ave., died at 2:21 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at home, surrounded by his family and friends, after a short illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Balltown, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be the parish wake service at 4 p.m. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gassman worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co., FDL Foods, Inc. and Farmland Foods for 47 years, until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement, he worked part time at the Telegraph Herald.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1935, in Balltown, son of Jacob and Elsie (Cummer) Gassman. He married Jane A. Willman Meyer on Aug. 30, 2001, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Marvin was a graduate of the former Loras Academy. He served with the Army from 1957-1959, spending some time in Germany.

Marvin was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was an avid Hawkeye, Bear and Cubs fan.

He enjoyed fishing, playing euchre and the nickel slots. Marvin enjoyed "farming" with his son-in-law, Steve. He especially enjoyed feeding the ducks with his granddaughter, Kenzie.

Marvin was a loving husband, father and "papa." He always put his friends first and knew how to enjoy life with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Surviving are his wife, Jane A. Gassman; two daughters, Carol A. (Karl) Frosiy, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Jaime K. (Steve) Capesius, of La Motte, Iowa; a son, Benji M. (Jenny) Meyer, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Jody (Karl) Greve, Jill Ganahl, Kevin Carneek and McKenzie and Rylee Capesius; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Leon) Brimeyer, of Dubuque, and Ruthie Breitbach, of Balltown; a sister-in-law, Nancy Gassman, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred (Joseph) Sahm; a brother, Jake Gassman; and a brother-in-law, Billy Breitbach.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque and all the friends who visited or sent cards or food, especially Julie Dupont and Tom Howes, for their care and concern.
