Clara E. Lindecker

Clara E. Lindecker, 94, of 615 Kaufmann Ave., formerly of 2619 Central Ave., died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

Mrs. Lindecker worked at the Battery Factory during World War II.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1908, in Durango, Iowa, daughter of John and Caroline (Messerknecht) Schmitt. She married George E. Lindecker on Jan. 8, 1930, at St. Joseph's Church, Rickardsville, Iowa; he preceded her in death on March 5, 1952.

Clara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved children and was the favorite baby-sitter for her family and neighbors

She enjoyed dancing and singing. Clara was known as the "The Mighty Schmitt" because she was a strong woman and worked hard all her life. She had a very good memory for songs, poems and Bible verses and was always ready with "pearls of wisdom."

Clara was especially fond of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter, Rose J. (Joseph) Girot, of East Dubuque, Ill.; two sons, Ken H. (Barb) Lindecker, of Asbury, Iowa, and Roger H. Lindecker, of Dubuque; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Betsy Lindecker and Mary Lou Lindecker, both of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Calvin Lindecker and Gene Lindecker; a grandson, Danny Lindecker; and five sisters and five brothers.

A Clara E. Lindecker Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Finley Home Care for their care and concern for Clara.
