Ronald R. Pline

Ronald R. Pline, 81, of 812 Thomas Place, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at home, surrounded by family, following a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 2 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1928, in Dubuque, son of Reuben and Alberta (Nicks) Pline. He married Gloria Kennedy on Sept. 20, 1949, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Ron owned and operated Pline Battery Station in Dubuque since 1946. He served in the Naval Reserves from 1946 to 1953.

Ron played tenor sax, alto sax and bass clarinet over the years with Joe Costa, Joey Paradiso, Louie Runde, Larry Foster, Paul Hemmer and Jerry Accola. He enjoyed gardening, weaving, woodworking, framing and collecting. As a member of Geyser Gazers, he loved his yearly trips to Yellowstone.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Pline, of Dubuque; eight children, Kathy Callaghan, Bill (Luanus) Pline and Kevin (Martha) Pline, all of Dubuque, Allan (Connie) Pline, of Peosta, Iowa, Lorna (Craig) Olson, of La Motte, Iowa, Janice (David) Bechen, of Dubuque, Scott (Beth) Pline, of Newton, Iowa, and Jim (Lori Bordner) Pline, of Schapville, Ill.; 24 grandchildren, Don (Heather) Callaghan, Jennifer (Brian) Fondell, Brittany Gaylord, Alexis Morrison, Jason (Barb) Pline, Jill (Jason) Miller, Jeremy (Elisa) Pline, Jessica (Pete) Hesselman, Corey Olson, Casey Olson, Lori Olson, Codey Olson, Lindsey Bechen, Chris Bechen, Joshua Pline, Cory Pline, Brad (Angie) Pline, Danielle (Steve Campbell) Pline, Katie Pline, Caleb Pline, Jim (Holly Gottschalk) Pline Jr., Rebecca (Wayne Sharkey) Pline, Jonathan Pline and Desaray Bordner; 15 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sidney, Spencer, Meadow, Ben, Kaylee, Nathan, Cecelia, Will, Matthew, Mason, Alexis, Payton, Aiden and Alissa; and three sisters, Elizabeth (Vern) Sodawasser, Sandra (Bill) Gassman and Cynthia Breithaupt; and nieces and nephews, including a special niece and goddaughter, Dee Hohmann, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Pline, in infancy; three grandchildren, Wade Pline, Zachary Pline and Spencer Pline; two brothers, Dale Pline and Harlow Pline; a brother-in-law, Richard Breithaupt; a sister-in-law, Sharon Pline; and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Pline

In lieu of flowers, a Ronald R. Pline Memorial Fund has been established, and proceeds will be sent to the Indian missions that Ron has supported.
