Sammie G. Owens, 65, of 430 Sidney St., East Dubuque, Ill., formerly of Hanover, Ill., and Dubuque, died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Owens worked at John Deere Dubuque Works from 1960 to 1980.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1938, in Cerro Gordo, Tenn., son of Robert and Ethel (Oakley) Owens.

He was a Navy veteran and a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94 and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5300, of Hanover, Dubuque Boat Club and the Dubuque Waterski Club. He was an avid fisherman and hunter in his younger years.

Surviving are three children, Pamela A. (Monte) Thorpe, of Dubuque, Peggy A. Owens (Kenny Busby), of Seattle, Wash., and Brad M. (Michelle) Owens, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Matthew, Mallory and Garrett Hohmann, and Rylee and Blair Owens; and a brother, Max Owens, of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James D. Owens; and a stepsister, Beryl Owens.

A Sammie G. Owens Memorial Fund has been established.
