NEW VIENNA, Iowa - Francis "Prete" Ahlers, 88, of New Vienna, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Guttenberg (Iowa) Care Center, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, with the Rev. John O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Ahlers owned and operated the General Store in New Vienna, retiring in the 1970s.

He was born on June 18, 1914, in New Vienna, son of John and Magdalen (Burlage) Ahlers.

He served his country in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Eugene, Elmer, Irvin, Alois and Alfred Ahlers; and seven sisters, Marie Ahlers, Germaine Ungs, Isabelle Donohoe, Verna Kruse, Juliana Ahlers, Esther Ahlers and Edna Ahlers.
