Viola M. Schadler, 82, of 2020 W. Third St., passed away peacefully at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 4 p.m.

She was born on June 15, 1920, daughter of Nicholas and Magdalena (Weber) Manders.

Vi has been a lifelong resident of Dubuque. In her early years, she was a practical nurse at the former St. Joseph's Sanitarium and St. Dominic Villa and also worked at the mitten factory.

She married Marvin Schadler on April 15, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. After her marriage, she became a homemaker and was known for her delicious pies. Vi had been a member of Nativity Parish since 1944. She had a beautiful love for her husband while maintaining a constant nurturing and gentle love for her children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and all who were blessed to have known her.

Surviving are her children, Robert J. (Bonnie) Schadler, of Tucson, Ariz., and Paul T. and Jerry J. Schadler, and Karen J. (David) Osterberger, all of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Linda, Nick and Michael Schadler, and Jason and Ryan Osterberger; six great-grandchildren: Lucas, Brady and Ashley Osterberger, and Josh, Andrea and James Schadler; and two sisters, Alberta (Edwin) Lattner, of Dubuque, and Katherine Manders, of Chicago. Also surviving is Vi's faithful dog, Vienna, who was always at her side.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, on April 19, 1991; three brothers, Ervin, Marvin and Tom Manders; and a sister, Rose Schmitt.

A Viola M. Schadler Memorial Fund has been established.

Vi's family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Schreiber, Mercy Home Care and "Rahe of Hope" Deb Rahe for their devoted and most helpful caring ways.
