2 DYERSVILLE RESIDENTS IDENTIFIED AS CRASH VICTIMS

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Authorities released the names of two people killed in a traffic accident Tuesday afternoon near Dyersville.

Bernice Brunkan, 80, and James Brunkan, 84, both of Dyersville, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol said Bernice Brunkan was operating the vehicle and attempted to cross the westbound lane of U.S. 20 at Seventh Street when the vehicle was struck broadside by a semi-tractor trailer.

The semi, operated by William Ament, 51, of Epworth, was traveling west. Ament was not injured.

Authorities said the weather conditions were normal when the accident occurred at 12:51 p.m.

The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - James A. Brunkan, 84, and his wife, Bernice R. Brunkan, 80, of Dyersville, formerly of Sand Springs, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Delaware County.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton, with burial in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Council 1863 rosary at 4 p.m., and a parish scripture service at 8 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Jim was born on Oct. 25, 1918, in Dyersville, son of Anton and Mary (Heiring) Brunkan.

Bernice was born on April 13, 1922, in Holy Cross, daughter of William and Ruth (Weber) Meyer.

Jim and Bernice were married on Sept. 22, 1941, in Worthington. They farmed near Sand Springs until 1963, when they became the owners and operators of the Sand Springs Station until they retired. Jim also was a salesperson for Moorman Feed Co.

Jim and Bernice were active members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs for many years, and most recently were members of St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton.

Jim was a member of the Monticello Knights of Columbus Council 1863 and the Worthington Catholic Order of Foresters Court 607. Bernice was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. They were devoted to their children and grandchildren. They loved gardening and always enjoyed playing cards with their friends.

Surviving are four sons, William (Barbara) Brunkan, of Davenport, Thomas (Cathe) Brunkan, of Sioux City, James Brunkan, of Belton, Mo., and Steven (Janet) Brunkan, of Meridan, Kan.; two daughters: Susan (Larry) Genalo, of Elkhart, and Sharon Brunkan, of Garner; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jim is survived by a sister, Stella Hogan, of Columbus, Mont.; four brothers, Robert (Fran) Brunkan and David (Marian) Brunkan, both of Dyersville, Monsignor Walter Brunkan, of Greene, and Richard (Colette) Brunkan, of Elmgrove, Wis.; and a brother-in-law, Richard Schmaltz, of Dubuque.

Bernice is survived by a sister, Agnes Kintzle, of Manchester.

Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jean Schmaltz.

Bernice was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Meyer; and a sister, Mary Reynolds.
