Mary Virginia (Ryan) Scanlan, 84, of Los Altos Hills, Calif., formerly of Dubuque, passed away at peace Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Los Altos Sub-Acute & Rehab Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Los Altos, followed by burial in Gates of Heaven Cemetery. A rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Los Altos Chapel at Spangler Mortuaries, Los Altos.

She was born on Dec. 29, 1918, daughter of James Patrick and Frances (McCarron) Ryan. A native of Dubuque, she resided in Mason City and Des Moines.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Clarke College, Dubuque, and performed in Des Moines as a concert pianist.

In 1946, she encountered childhood pal, David Patrick Scanlan. They courted in Chicago, were married in 1947, and moved to California. They raised five children in California, Oregon and Washington, where Mr. Scanlan worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. They settled in Los Altos Hills.

She was a homemaker and self employed. She was a devoted member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She served as president of both the Los Altos Republican Women and the Assistance League of Los Altos.

Surviving are her adoring daughters, Virginia Scanlan, of Mount View, Calif., and Teresa Bugella, of Menlo Park, Calif.; three devoted sons, David Scanlan, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Paul Scanlan, her most dedicated caregiver, of Los Altos Hills, and Peter Scanlan, of San Francisco; and grandchildren, Caitlin Scanlan, of Manhattan Beach, and Colin and Alessia Bugella, of Menlo Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mary Virginia Scanlan be made to the University of California Regents Memory and Aging Center, P.O. Box 1207, San Francisco, Calif. 94143-1207.
