Aloysius L. Weitz

Aloysius "Al" L. Weitz, 85, of 2999 Burden Ave., passed away at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on March 13, 1924, in Dubuque, son to Alois and Nellie (Gloden) Weitz. He married Mary Catherine Rohowetz, of Dodgeville, Wis., on Aug. 8, 1953; she preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1990.

Al worked for Dubuque Insulation & Siding Co. (DISCO) for 25 years. He also worked at John Deere Dubuque Works and was a foreman at the former Dubuque Packing Co.

He graduated from Columbia Academy -- Loras College in 1947, with a bachelor of arts in history and classics. He was a devout Catholic and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church his whole life. He was proud to sing in the choirs of Sacred Heart, Saint Patrick's and Saint Mary's churches since he was 18, totaling 67 years. He also was a member of Catholics United for the Faith.

He enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeye sports, especially watching his grandson, Cliff Moore winning a national championship in wrestling. He enjoyed watching his son Tom participate in dragon boat racing and was very proud of him winning a couple world championships. He took pride in the accomplishments of all his children and grandchildren.

Al was passionate about politics and the pro-life movement and often contributed letters to the Telegraph Herald editor.

He enjoyed his many overseas trips with his wife and especially loved taking his family on vacations and in later years his family taking him on their vacations. He enjoyed hikes with his son, Greg, in the Carolina mountains and his many walks at Miller Riverview Park and was fond of making friends with anyone he met. He also was a proud supporter of the new All Veterans Memorial in honor of his veteran relatives.

Surviving are seven sons, Gregory Weitz, of Tamassee, S.C., Paul (Judy) Weitz, of Anamosa, Iowa, Bruce (Crystal) Weitz, of Ankeny, and Daniel Weitz, Thomas (Linda) Weitz, Jerome (Kris) Weitz, and James (JoAnn) Weitz, all of Dubuque; a daughter, Mary Nell (Steven) Moore, of Sherrill; 16 grandchildren, Angelica (Jamie) Gaherty, Allissa Weitz, Elizabeth (Zac) Siebels, Natasha Weitz, Trent (Anke) Moore, Cliff (Michelle) Moore, Nellie Moore, Austin Weitz, Connor Weitz, Erica Weitz, Meridel Weitz, Jonathon Weitz, Casey Weitz, Kylie Weitz, Kaylena Murphy and Dylan Weitz; and seven great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael L. Weitz; an infant daughter, Elizabeth Weitz; brothers, Ralph Weitz, Carl Weitz, John Weitz and Richard Weitz; and a sister, Margaret Weitz Winders.
