Charles L. "Chuck" Russell, 57, of 1100 Garfield Ave., Dubuque, formerly of Platteville, Wis., and Las Vegas, Nev., died at 2:49 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Chapel Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League, the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans and the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1946, in Savanna, Ill., son of Albert and Dorothy (Dean) Russell. He married Virginia K. Wetter on Aug. 28, 1995, in Las Vegas.

He served with the Army during the Vietnam Conflict in Vietnam and was awarded various medals and ribbons including the Purple Heart.

He worked as a security guard in the casinos for several years in Las Vegas. He returned to Dubuque in June 2002.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. He was a former vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Platteville and a former member of the Honor Guard of the Beloit (Wis.) VFW Post.

In the past, Chuck enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also liked gambling and playing euchre in the league at Tony's Tap.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia K. Russell; a daughter, Crystal Lynn Russell, of Las Vegas; sons, Charles "Chuck" Lang, of Lancaster, Wis., and Kevin Russell, of Little Rock, Ark.; stepdaughters, Nancy Kramer and Karen (Bob) McClain, both of Dubuque; stepsons, Brandyn Phillips Sr., of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Brian (Renee) Martin, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Russell and Beverly Kelly, both of Potosi, Wis.; a brother, Cletus Russell, of Potosi; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin, in infancy; a brother, Al Russell; and a stepson, Boyd Delaney.

A Charles L. Russell Memorial Fund has been established.
