Arlene E. "Blondie" Chapman

Arlene E. "Blondie" Chapman, 81, of Dubuque, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at home surrounded by her six children and numerous grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with Monsignor Wayne A. Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St.

She was born on March 18, 1928, in Dubuque, daughter of Leo and Elizabeth (Finzel) Herbst. She married Charles F. Chapman on June 22, 1948, at St. Philomena Church, Asbury, Iowa; he preceded her in death on May 15, 1998.

She graduated from the former St. Joseph Academy in Dubuque.

Arlene was employed as a machine operator at Janlan Plastic Co. for many years.

She was a great baby-sitter for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed spending time at the cottage in East Dubuque, Ill., with friends and family.

She was a member of St. Raphael Cathedral.

Surviving are four daughters, Deborah A. Chapman, of Sun City, Ariz., Patricia (Jon) Numedahl, of Decorah, Iowa, and Kathy Jo (Wade) Hayward and Penny (Tom) Schissel, both of Dubuque; two sons, Daniel (Mary) Chapman, of Dubuque, and Michael (Sandra) Chapman, of East Dubuque; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Roslyn Ehrlich, of Dubuque, Betty (Bill) Theisen, of Holy Cross, Iowa, and Anita (Jim) Guylash and Sylvia (Ken) Dietz, both of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Irene Herbst, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Leo Abitz, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Tracey; two sisters, Florence Weiland and LaVon Abitz; and a brother, Leo Herbst.
