Another Old Settler Gone.
John Engler, Sr., an old resident of this vicinity died at his home in Dubuque, Monday night, April 17, 1911 in the 85th year of his age. The deceased was born in Bittsburg, Rhine province, Germany Sept 1838. Came to America and settled in Dubuque Co., IA in 1848. He moved to Clinton Co., in 1864 and to Sac Co. in 1890 and settled on a farm, where he lived about 3 years. He then built the present hotel in Early, which he operated for a time and for many years lived in town. At the time of his death he still owed a farm 5 miles north of town. John Engler was three times married and the last wife survives him. To the first union there were five children born and are still living, namely, J.F. and Adam Engler, Mrs. Michael Dahm, Mrs. G.A. Hartman, and Mrs. J.H. Brinkman. To the other marriages no children were born. J.F. Engler and Mrs. Michael Dahm and daughter Miss Mary of this place went to Dubuque last week to minister at their father's sick bedside and were present at this death. The Funeral was held in Dubuque Wednesday and the remains were brought here for interment yesterday accompanied by the bereaved widow, J.F. Engler, Mrs. Michael Dahm and daughter, and a nephew, Herman Frick of Dubuque. Burial services were held and interment made in the Catholic Cemetery here yesterday morning. Relatives present at the burial from out of town were his son Adam of Jeffers, MN, Mrs. Patzer, Mrs. James Fritz, Mrs. Meyer and son of Carroll, and George Engler, a nephew of Bearsford, SD. John Engler, Sr., was a splendid man, honored and beloved by all who knew him, and an exemplary husband and a kind and loving father, and his death is not only mourned by the sorrowing members of his family, but by a very large circle of friends.
