Donald C. Farquar

Donald C. Farquar, 92, of 2700 Matthew John Drive, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. today. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1916, in Dubuque, son of Walter and Freda (Buse) Farquar. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and Bayless Business College.

He married Cleo Miller on Feb. 1, 1939, at St. Peter Lutheran Church; she preceded him in death on June 22, 2003.

Don, a World War II veteran, served with the 1st Infantry Division. He was wounded the last day of the war on May 6, 1945, in Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign and Good Conduct medals.

He was employed by Farley and Loetscher Manufacturing Co. for 28 years and Carr Moehl Millwork Co. While employed at Farley's, he and Cleo owned and operated the Millwork Outlet on Kaufmann Avenue. He then worked for 28 years at the Eska Co. where he received the "Sears Special Achievement" award, retiring at the age of 71.

He was a lifetime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, having served on several boards and as head usher for 33 years.

Don's hobby was the amusement industry. He and Cleo traveled the United States, to many state fairs, carnivals, amusement parks, Las Vegas and spring training for the New York Yankees in Tampa, Fla. When no longer able to travel, the Chicago Cubs and NASCAR were his entertainment. Prior to traveling, they loved to dance to the big bands at Melody Mill.

Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara (Howard) Cassady, of Tampa, Fla., and Sandra (Robert) Stepanek, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a granddaughter, Dr. Laurie Stepanek, of San Francisco.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores.

Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Christian Crusaders and Hospice of Dubuque.
