David J. Saunders Sr., 67, of 256 S. Grandview Ave., died at 4 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Private family services and burial will be in the Rock Island (Ill.) National Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Saunders worked as a sales associate for Frito-Lay.

He was born on June 14, 1935, in Dubuque, son of Frank and Ethel (Roddy) Saunders Sr. He married Donna M. Thill on Oct. 14, 1961, at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church.

He devoted 28 years of his life as a non-commission officer in Company A First Battalion 133rd Infantry of the Iowa National Guard in Dubuque.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; their children, David J. (Debra) Saunders Jr., of Lexington, Ky., Julia (Jerry) Reuter, of Potosi, Wis., and John Saunders, of Dubuque; his grandchildren, Douglas Clark, Joshua Reuter, Rebecca Reuter and Brittany Saunders; and a brother, Frank Saunders Jr.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Finley Hospital; Tri-State Dialysis, and nurses Mary and Donna for the care and comfort they gave to Dave and his family; and a special thank you to Marilyn and Al Hughes for their years of friendship and support.
