She was born on April 19, 1922, in Bernard, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Slattery) Melloy. She married Levi J. “L.J.” Sweeney on June 30, 1941 at St. Patrick’s Church, Garryowen, Iowa; he died on April 27, 1978.

She formerly was employed at St. Dominic Villa for 11 years and at Clarke College for 11 years. Kay was a member of Nativity Parish, and its rosary society.

She enjoyed sewing and making crafts, and working with her house plants. Kay delighted in finding “bargains” at garage sales or on the sales rack. She was a very loving woman and was “mom” to many people. She even warmed the hearts of the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor during her short stay.

(Connie) Sweeney, of Dubuque, and Patrick J. (Molly) Sweeney, of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Ehlinger, of Austin, Texas; and a half-sister, Mary Jo (James) Schiesl, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by three sons, Charles Sweeney, on Sept. 9, 1951, Thomas Sweeney, on April 16, 1965, and Robert Sweeney, on Nov. 13, 1971; and a brother-in-law, Gerald Ehlinger.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002, and the Sisters of the Mississippi Abbey, 8325 Abbey Hill, Dubuque, Iowa 52003-9576.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Leeson and Cheryl, Dr. Loukinen and Kim, the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque and Ennoble Manor Care Center, as well as the staff at Dumed for their care and concern for Kay.
