Adeline C. Nicks

Mrs. Joseph P. (Adeline C.) Nicks, 87, of 2625 Mesa Drive, died at 8:27 p.m. Thursday, Jan 2, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

She was born on Nov. 12, 1915, in Dubuque, daughter of William M. and Anna (Berens) Mentz. She married Joseph P. Nicks on April 25, 1938, at St. John's Church, Peosta, Iowa; he died on July 4, 1999.

As a young girl, Adeline was the butcher in her parents' grocery store, Mentz's Grocery, on 28th & Jackson Streets. She later worked in housekeeping at Dubuque Bank & Trust.

Adeline enjoyed doing yardwork and housekeeping. she was very proud of her yard and her home.

Surviving are two sons, Gary J. (Mary Jean) Nicks and Melvin P. Nicks, both of Dubuque; two grandchildren, Joan Nicks and Sharon (Mike) Ellerman, both of Dubuque; a great-grandson, Benjamin Ellerman; a sister, Mildred (Eldon) Sear, of Zwingle, Iowa; a son-in-law, Stephen Petsch, of Asbury, Iowa two sisters-in-law, Violet Mentz, of Dubuque, and Eleanor Mentz, of Des Moines; and a brother, Merlin J. Mentz, of De Witt, Iowa.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Kay Petsch, on Setp. 21, 2001; two brothers, Robert Mentz, in 1978, and William Mentz, in 1995; and a sister-in-law, Madeline Mentz.

Memorials may be given to St. Patrick's Parish, 1425 Iowa St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.
