Evelyn M. Donatsch

Evelyn M. Donatsch, 96, of 1983 University Ave., died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, and after 1 p.m. Monday at the church.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1907, in Dubuque, daughter of John and Hulda (Wahlatiz) Donatsch.

She graduated from Epworth (Iowa) High School and attended The Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She taught in rural schools for more than eight years, and then for several years during World War II, worked at a defense plant in Waterloo, Iowa. Evelyn returned to Dubuque, and was employed by Barnstead-Thermolyne Corp. for 20 years, retiring in 1972.

She was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Traveling, reading, gardening, crossword puzzles and flowers were some of Evelyn’s favorite pastimes. She was the family historian and enjoyed rooting for the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Surviving are a sister, Mildred Donatsch, of Dubuque; her nieces and nephews, Beverly (James) Metcalf, William (Linda) Chesterman and Carol Chesterman (Ron Balmer), all of Peosta, Iowa, Judy (Don) Schuster and James Donatsch, both of Dubuque, and Jean (John) Sutherland, of Cottonwood, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Pearl Donatsch, of Dubuque; 10 great-nieces and nephews and nine great-great-nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Mary and Bill Yeager.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Elmer Donatsch; a sister, Helen Chesterman; and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, an Evelyn M. Donatsch Memorial Fund has been established.

Evelyn’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Luther Manor for their wonderful care given to Evelyn.
