He married Violet M. “Vi” Thumser on Nov. 23, 1950, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque; she passed away on Nov. 25, 1998. Two broken hearts have now been joined again forever.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 568 and the Moose Lodge 355.

He was well known for his pork roasts that he did for so many people down through the years. He so much enjoyed his afternoon pops with his many friends at “Duffers” in Centralia, Iowa.

Surviving are eight children, Madonna Parker, William “Bill” (Joyce) Markus, Carol (Tom) Bertjens, Linda (Dan) Lucey and Mary Markus, all of Dubuque, Richard “Dick” (Janice) Markus, of Durango, Iowa, Judy (Keith) Hansen, of Marion, Iowa, and Diane (Dan) Hohmann, of Sherrill, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Jerrod and Cory Parker, Brian (Michelle) Markus, Julie (Matt) Wilson, Jodie and Sara Markus, Jennifer Hansen, Amanda and Elizabeth Bertjens, Greg and Bridget Hohmann and Angela, Dan “D.J.” and Scott Lucey; four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Abby Markus and Katie and Erica Wilson; brothers and sisters, Geraldine Williams, of Sparks, Nev., Mary Jane Boleyn and Ronald (Gloria) Markus Sr., both of Dubuque, Dorrance (Ida) Markus, of Moline, Ill., Joann Kremer, of Farley, Iowa, and Linda Takes, of Cascade, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Markus, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Frank (Elaine) Thumser, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Parker; a brother, Ben Markus Jr.; and four brothers-in-law, Allen Boleyn, Lou Hefel, Arnold Kremer Jr. and Larry Takes.

The family requests no flowers. A LaVerne B. “Vern” Markus Memorial Fund has been established by his family.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Hartmann, Dr. Aigner, the Wendt Regional Cancer Center and Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern shown to our dad.
