Loretta G. (Sprengelmeyer) Powers

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- Mrs. Loretta G. (Sprengelmeyer) Powers, 102, of Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, formerly of East Dubuque, died at 9:10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque, with the Rev. Jim Parker officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 N., East Dubuque, where there will be a parish rosary scripture service at 6 p.m.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1906, in Dubuque, daughter of Benjamin and Rose (Flesch) Bistram. She was a graduate of East Dubuque High School, Class of 1924, and Clarke College, Dubuque, Class of 1928.

She married Lucian E. Sprengelmeyer on July 8, 1930, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque; he preceded her in death on July 1, 1964. She later married Eldon J. Powers on Feb. 14, 1981, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1994.

She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society, and she also served as church organist for many years. Loretta enjoyed the piano and organ and taught music for years. She also was a member of the former East Dubuque Garden Club.

Surviving are a son, Judge Victor V. (Mary Beth) Sprengelmeyer, of East Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Linda Bumgarner, Peter Sprengelmeyer, Dr. Michelle Sprengelmeyer, Mara Strayer, Alisa Raines, John Sprengelmeyer and James Sprengelmeyer; 10 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Barbara Sprengelmeyer, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Fonda Sprengelmeyer, of Overland Park, Kan.; a stepson, Paul (Anne) Powers, of Dubuque; a stepdaughter, Brigid (Charles) Geroux, of Eau Claire, Wis.; five stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas and William Sprengelmeyer.
