Capt. Holcombe Dead.
Demise of a Prominent and Old Time River Captain.

Capt. Holcombe

Capt. Edwin V. Holcombe, of St. Paul, and formerly of Dubuque, died in the former city last week and was buried there Thursday in Calvary cemetery, by the side of his son, William Holcombe, who was buried there three years ago. The relatives present included Mrs. Holcombe, one son, Edwin R. Holcombe, and a daughter, Mrs. Kilpatrick.

Capt. Holcombe came to Dubuque from Galena during the Civil war. At that time he was a captain of a river steamer, it being the palmy days of Mississippi steam boating. He married his wife in Galena, she being Adele Soulard, daughter of the well known and honored citizen of that name, and sister of the late Mrs. John D. Jennings of this city, and of Mrs. John D. Corwith, of Chicago. While in Dubuque, they were prominent in social and business circles. They removed to St. Paul in 1870, when Capt. Holcombe became general manager of a line of steamers on the Red river of the North, running to Winnipeg. Afterwards he became head of the Northwest Fuel Co., and was a leading citizen of St. Paul for many years.
