Dubuque Weekly Times, June 2, 1859.

THE LATE GEORGE L. NIGHTENGALE, ESQ.-

It has become our painful duty since our last issue, to record the death of our friend, Mr. G. L. Nightengale. He died on Sunday morning about half past one o’clock, in the 44th year of his age.
We believe we speak the universal feeling of Dubuque, and the whole range of Mr. Nightengale’s acquaintances, when we say that few men in this locality were more respected and more confided in, and few ever died here so deeply regretted as the gentleman.
Mr. Nightengale was born in Bradford, England, a descendant of a respectable and intelligent family. The deceased was a man of very superior natural talents, and these combined with a good education, a becoming address, and an extensive knowledge of his profession as a Lawyer, marked him as a most useful and intelligent citizen.
Mr. Nightengale came here in 1835, and has been engaged rather extensively in mining, commercial, legal and magisterial business ever since, and has been twice Mayor of the City. He entertained enlarged and sound opinions of our national institutions, and was a prominent and influential leader in the political party to which he belonged. We do not pretend to say he was free from faults or failings, but these leaned to virtue’s side.
