Irene M. Schroeder

GARBER, Iowa -- Irene Matilda Rosetta (Handke) Schroeder, 95, of Garber, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at St. John's Catholic Church, Garber, with the Rev. Laura Gentry and the Rev. William Gentry officiating. Burial will be in Mount Harmony Cemetery, rural Elkport. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

She was born on March 13, 1913, near Osterdock, daughter of Harry Handke and Amanda (Sadewasser) Handke. She received her education locally, farmed with her family and was a homemaker for many years.

She married Clarence Schroeder on March 12, 1932, in Galena, Ill.; he preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, LaVonne (Edward) Rodenberg and Myrna Backes, both of Guttenberg; four sons, Hermie (Janet) Schroeder, Lyle (Hollis) Schroeder and Gary (Jennifer) Schroeder, all of Garber, and Dennis Schroeder, of McGregor; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; seven great great-granchildren, a brother, Arthur Handke, of Littleport; a son-in-law, Alfred Bahls, of La Crescent, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Don Dodge, of Edgewood.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Darlene Bahls; two brothers, Chester and Ervin; three sisters, Loraine Miller, Marie Pensel and Lucille Dodge; and a son-in-law, Harlan Backes.
