Charles D. Haferbecker Sr.

Charles D. Haferbecker Sr., 77, of 1925 Washington St., formerly of Jackson St., died at 11:58 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the chapel.

He was born on June 25, 1930, in Dubuque, son of David and Amanda (Winger) Haferbecker. Charlie attended Bryant School, Center Grove School and Washington Junior High School.

He married Adelaide "Addie" Boggild on July 15, 1962, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Dubuque.

In 1947, he began working for Ertl Toys in Dubuque when they opened for business. Charlie then worked for Conlon Construction and Willey Construction and was a molder in the foundry at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. and in the foundry at John Deere Dubuque Works, until the early 1980s.

Charlie liked fishing, playing cards and playing croquet every Sunday at Flora Park. He enjoyed cooking and was a fantastic chef who would often make enough to feed the family at the park. Charlie had an incredible sense of humor and was known to be quite a jokester.

Surviving are his wife, Adelaide "Addie" Haferbecker, of Dubuque; four daughters, Carol (Doug) Paul and Laura Haferbecker, both of Dubuque, Debbie (Dave) Root, of Janesville, Wis., and Nancy (Gerald) Heimann, of Gratiot, Wis.; four sons, Steve (Donna) Haferbecker, Mike Haferbecker, Charlie Haferbecker Jr. and David Haferbecker, all of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a very special cousin, Jay (Pat) Winger, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
