Marion Neuwoehner

Marion Neuwoehner, 89, of Dubuque, died Friday afternoon, March 21, 2008, at Oak Park Place surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Marion was born on March 7, 1919, in Asbury, Iowa, daughter of Frank and Martha (Ehrlich) Kendrick. She was united in marriage to Robert F. Neuwoehner on Sept. 7, 1940, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Marion was a homemaker and raised a family of five. She was a member of Resurrection Parish, volunteered many years in the Mercy Service Club gift shop and spent many hours as a parent helper at St. Joseph's School.

She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 30 years and served as a sponsor to many and provided inspiration to others struggling with the disease. Her strength and ability to overcome was amazing. She was deeply respected not only by her family and friends, but by her peers as well. Her support and encouragement meant so much to so many.

Marion had a wonderful wit, an incredible sense of humor, and was able to find something funny in almost everything. There were times she would make you laugh so hard you would cry. Her smile and her spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Also known as the famous "goose lady" of Asbury Road, her front porch goose was always well dressed, and had a wardrobe that was appropriate for any occasion which brought a smile to many a passer-by. Folks looked forward to seeing what the goose was wearing. Admirers would provide suggestions and one even brought the goose gifts on its birthday.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Robert F. Neuwoehner; five children, Carol (Joseph) Bitter, Robert (Alana) Neuwoehner, and Russel "Chris" (Jeanne) Neuwoehner, all of Dubuque, Leslie (Colin) Collins, of Sycamore, Mo., and Sara (John) Wagner, of Minnetonka, Minn.; two sisters, Jean (James) Weiland and Rita (LaVerne) Hittenmiller, both of Dubuque; a brother, Richard (LeAnn) Kendrick, of Lancaster, Pa.; in addition, Marion leaves behind a beautiful legacy consisting of 14 grandchildren, Anne (Bitter) LoGrande, Margaret (Bitter) MacBeth, Joseph Bitter, Susie (Bitter) Noonan, Tom Bitter, Kate (Bitter) Bisping, Greg, Scott and Ryan Neuwoehner, Eric, Kurt and Kristi Neuwoehner, Quanna (Speake) Hafer and Summer (Speake) Fogle; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Gail Spautz, Niece Richeson and Marcella Digman; her brothers, Don and Francis Kendrick; and a son-in-law, Joseph Bitter.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Sherry and Edna of Hospice of Dubuque, and the staff and residents of Oak Park Place for all their kind words, attention and care.
