Viola C. Schuster Bonz

Viola C. Schuster Bonz, 95, of Bethany Home, formerly of St. Mary's Apartments, Dubuque, and Hazel Green, Wis., died peacefully at 9:40 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, surrounded by her family at Bethany Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 5 p.m.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1912, in Peru Township, Dubuque County, daughter of George and Anna (Grobstick) Wild. She attended the Immaculate Conception Academy.

She married Gail Schuster on June 11, 1935, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on July 31, 1963. In October of 1965, Vi married Leo Bonz; he preceded her in death on May 19, 1972.

Vi formerly worked at the Battery Factory, Humke's Bakery and was a cook in several area diners, including the Cavalier.

She was a member of Holy Ghost Parish and Rosary Society and was an Operation New View volunteer.

She enjoyed cooking, playing cards and bingo.

Surviving are three daughters, Gayle M. Mellon, of Dubuque, Gloria A. Wallenhorst, of Dickeyville, Wis., and Grace M. Shade, of Dubuque; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Starr Hull; two sons-in-law, Mike Mellon and Merlin Wallenhorst; a sister, Christina (Al) Eiting; two brothers, Frank (Martha) Wild and John (Stella) Wild.

The family wishes to thank the Staff of Bethany Home and the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care and concern for Vi.
