Lois V. Michopoulos

Lois V. Michopoulos, 79, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, March 7, 2008, after an extended illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Arch Angel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, Colorado Springs.

She was born in Joliet, Ill., daughter of Peter Kloston and Linnea (Saxon) Kloston. As a young child, she and her family moved to Dubuque, where Peter and Linnea founded Betty Jane Candies.

After World War II, on a trip to her father's homeland in Greece to provide relief to family and friends, she met John E. Michopoulos, a Royal Greek Air Force officer and official war correspondent for Greece.

John resigned his commission and abandoned his journalism and radio career to follow Lois to Dubuque, where they were married; he preceded her in death.

John learned the candy art from his new father-in-law, Peter, and in 1950, John and Lois moved to Colorado Springs and founded Michelle Candies.

Surviving are her sons, Andrew and James; daughters-in-law, Betty, Georgia and Cathy; grandchildren, John, Alexis, Elisa and Stephanie; step-grandchildren, Larry and Deborah Carillo; and nieces and nephews, John, Linnea and Gail Heinz, Jack and Jason Dye, and Rebecca Nobel.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Peter and Thymios; a grandson, John; two sisters, Helen Dye and Ruth Heinz; and brothers-in-law, John Heinz and Jack Dye.

A special "thank-you" to Jodi McConnell who provided immeasurable comfort to Lois and her family as Lois passed from this life.
