Charles J. Hartman

Charles Joseph "Joe" Hartman, 62, of Dubuque, formerly of Galena, Ill., died Monday, March 3, 2008, at home surrounded by his family.

Private family services will be at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating and a flag presentation by American Legion Post 6. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Galena.

He was born on March 23, 1945, in Galena, son of Harold and Jeanette (Werner) Hartman. He married Kathryn Davis, of Galena, on Oct. 17, 1975, in Dubuque.

After high school graduation in Galena, he served in the military from 1966 to 1968, as an image interpreter.

Joe was a jack-of-all-trades and worked a number of different jobs throughout the years. For health reasons, he had to retire after 21 years from the City of Dubuque Building Service Department. He looked forward to going to work everyday, which is a true testament to his co-workers, Rich, Doc, Lyle, Jerry, Dennis, Steve, Tom and Connie.

He was a proud father of his three sons, and was always available to his family and friends in need.

His interest included gardening, fishing, watching sports and, every spring, hunting morels. He particularly enjoyed a good game of cards with family and friends.

Joe's faith was very important to him and he was a member of St. Columbkille Church.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy; his three sons, Jason, of Dublin, Ireland, Andy, of Des Moines, and Ryan, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his mother, Jeanette (Werner) Hartman, of Galena; his two sisters, Jeanette "Boop" Meneguin, of Scales Mound, Ill., and Mary Hartman, of Galena; a brother, Harold (Joyce) Hartman, of Galena, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hartman.

A special thank-you goes to family, friends and neighbors for all the support they have given to us, particularly these past few months. The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the following for their kindness and compassionate care: Mark Hermann, MD, and his staff at Dubuque Internal Medicine, Judy, Gail, Sandy, Sara Jo and Linda, and also the doctors and staff at the Wendt Regional Cancer Center and, lastly, to Hospice of Dubuque. They all made a difference in Joe's battle with pancreatic cancer these past 2 1/2 years.
