Dewain H. Manthey
Dewain H. "Dewey" Manthey, 77, of Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Dubuque, died at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, in Harlingen, following a long-term illness.
Memorial services will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Eagle's Club, 1175 Century Drive, Dubuque. Burial of the cremated remains will be buried in Rio Grande Valley Veterans Cemetery, Million, Texas.
He was born on Jan. 6, 1931, in Sterling, Minn., son of Herman and Maggie (Carpenter) Manthey. He married Lila Briggs on April 6, 1956; she preceded him in death. He then married Christine Allen on July 13, 2001.
Dewain was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the military from 1948 to 1952. He was an active member in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Americas Last Patrol Post 3, Elsa, Texas, and a member of the disabled American Veterans & Rio Grande Valley Veteran Alliance.
He worked at Trausch Bakery and Sunbeam for 28 years until his retirement.
He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Manthey, of Harlingen, four sons, Scott Manthey, of Northfield, Ill., Wayne (Joy) Manthey, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Gregory "Skip" (Laurie) Manthey and Timothy Manthey, both of Dubuque; a daughter, Sharon Manthey, of Dubuque; three sisters, Annetta Hoffman, of Springville, Ark., Betty Hagen, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Gen Freeberg, of Mankato. Minn.; and two grandchildren, Steven and Deb, of Dubuque.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Maggie Manthey, and his brothers, Donnie, Malcolm, Francis and Gale.
