Gertrude M. Sutton

Gertrude M. Sutton, 91, a third generation Dubuquer, died peacefully Saturday, March 1, 2008, surrounded by her family.

She was born on August 15, 1916, the seventh child of William and Bertha (Palen) Andresen. She married Nicholas J. Sutton on October 7, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Nick preceded her in death on October 10, 1963.

For 15 years, Gert worked as an executive secretary for the city of Dubuque Water Department, retiring in 1978. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart grade school and the Visitation Academy. Gert was a long-time member of the Mercy Hospital Service Club and St. Anthony's parish.

A strong, creative, independent and intelligent lady whose sense of humor lasted to the end. Gert loved to garden, play a good game of euchre, and although she never claimed to be a great cook, her baking skills were unsurpassed. Throughout her life, Gert maintained friendships that went back to her childhood. She loved her family, her faith and Dubuque. She is going to be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Gert was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ciara Cullen; four sisters, Margaret Holmberg, Mary Smith, Leona Dolan and Helen Holz; and three brothers, Wilfred, Charles, and George.

Gert is survived by her children, Kathryn "Kathy" (Tom) Cullen, their children, Elizabeth and J. Nicholas, of Seattle, Wash., Nicholas J. Sutton Jr. "Nick" (Susan Jane), their children, Keith, Lindsay, Zach, Nicholas J. III and Harry, of Kentfield Calif., Sarah A. Sutton, of Dubuque, and Mary Frances "Molly" (Peter) Weis, of Dubuque, and their daughter, Lauren, of De Pere, Wis.; she also is survived by her sister, Bertha (Red) McAleece, of Dubuque.
