Richard A. Dolter

Richard A. "Dick" Dolter, 84, of 200 Devon Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sun-day, Feb. 18, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque.

He was born on July 2, 1923, in Dubuque, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Klein) Dolter. He married Delphine Klein on Feb. 10, 1945, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage.

At the age of 13, Dick got his first job as a caddy manager at Bunker Hill Golf Course, starting off a lifelong passion for golfing. He was known to always play a straight game.

After beginning his career at A.Y. McDonald, he was employed for 32 years at Swiss Valley Farms in sales. He retired in 1982.

Dick and Delphine were longtime members of Nativity Catholic Church, and recently joined St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Teamsters Local 421.

In his youth, Dick was quarterback and captain of the Teenie Weenies football team at Loras Academy. He was an avid sports fan, and walking sports encyclopedia.

Dick was a great storyteller, and had an endless sense of humor. He delighted in making people laugh.

He will be remembered as a wonderful husband and father, and a great friend to many.

Surviving are his wife, Delphine; seven children, Suzanne (Michael) Muir, of Durango, Mark Dolter, of Cedar Rapids, Dick D. Dolter, Lynette (Tom) Howe, Daniel (Cheryl) Dolter, Paula (Tom) Giese and Andy (Terrie) Dolter, all of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren, Dana, Darin, Lena, Amanda, Louis, Anthony, Katie, Jill, Andrea, Alec, and Clayton Dolter, Nathan and Elizabeth Howe, Sam, Leah, and Peter McMahon, and Matthew and Stephanie Giese; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Lindsey Duehr; four brothers, Tom (Velma) Dolter, Joe (Rita) Dolter, Paul (Betty) Dolter, and Dave (Judy) Dolter, all of Dubuque; and his sister, Mary Link, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank, James, and Rev. Robert Dolter; and a sister Margaret.
