ST. DONATUS, Iowa -- Thelma L. Miller, 82, of St. Donatus, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Donatus Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Donatus Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m.

She was born on March 27, 1925, at her farm home in rural Bellevue, daughter of Anton and Regina (Huilman) Herrig. She married Kenneth Miller on June 16, 1947, at the St. Donatus Catholic Church. Together with family they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 17, 2007.

She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School, Bellevue, Iowa and received her teaching certificate from the University of Dubuque. She taught for 10 years in Jackson County one-room rural schools, first at Tete Des Morts Township School and later at Prairie Springs Township School. She taught nine years at St. Catherine Parochial until her retirement.

Thelma was a lifelong member of St. Donatus Rosary Society, and in her later years a member of the St. Donatus Senior Citizen's Card Club.

Thelma was a loving wife and mother. She was a special teacher, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She filled her home with the aroma of fresh baked bread and coffee cakes. Each grandchild will forever treasure a quilt stitched by her loving hand.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Miller Sr., of St. Donatus; four children, Kenneth Miller Jr. and Loras (Laura) Miller, both of Dubuque, Paul Miller, of St. Donatus, and Jeanne (Marv) Heiar, of St. Catherine's; 10 grandchildren, Kenneth Mark (Megan) Miller, Kris Miller, Kaitlyn Miller, Tony (Mardi) Heiar, Aaron (Joanna) Heiar, Jonathan Heiar, Jessica Miller, Eric Miller, Amanda Miller and Katherine (Brandon) Smith; four great-grandchildren, Michael Miller, Ava Miller, Zoe Heiar, and Zachary Heiar; a brother, Harold (Cleta) Herrig, of rural Bellevue; a sister, Rita Herrig, of Bellevue; a niece, Ruth (Steve) Seipp; three nephews, Stephen (Nan) Herrig, James Herrig, and Larry (Wendi) Herrig; and many great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark; and a nephew, Robert Herrig.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Finley Hospital (5th floor), Dr. Darryl Mozena and Dr. Mark Hermann.
