SHERRILL, Iowa -- Louis F. Birkel, 86, of 12791 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on May 3, 1921, in Specht's Ferry, son of Ferdinand and Cecelia (Motsch) Birkel. He farmed in Specht's Ferry his entire life, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish.

Surviving are a sister, Viola Engler, of Dubuque; a brother, Herman (Mary Lou) Birkel, of Dubuque; a special friend, Jane Ferrand, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 sisters.
