Viola C. Hefel

Viola C. Hefel, 78, of 3510 Daniels St, formerly of Sherrill, died Saturday, Feb 16, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., today, Feb. 18, at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m. Friends also may call from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home.

She was born July 3, 1929, in Sherrill, daughter of Henry J. and Theresa (Butlett) Gansemer. As the oldest of eight children being raised during the Depression, Viola faced many challenges.

She married Marcellus Hefel on June 8, 1948; he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1991.

They farmed together in the Sherrill area for many years. During this time, she took great pride in her garden, chickens and selling the farm eggs. She enjoyed writing and journaling and wrote a weekly column in the Dyersville Commercial.

She enjoyed playing cards, old-time music, dancing and most of all, volunteering at the Dubuque Arboretum. She was a member of Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. Viola never met a stranger and had many friends who shared her life in RSVP, 62 and Plus Club, Americlub, Emerald Club, and Dupaco Club.

Surviving are her four children, Harry (Susan) Hefel, and Wayne (Celeste) Hefel, both of Sherrill, Doris (Ron) Schueller, of Dubuque, LaVonne (Dan) Ewert, of Plano, Texas; eight grandchildren, Craig Hefel, Della Otradovec, Emily Thornton, Rod and Ryan Schueller, Elizabeth and John Hefel, Allison Ewert; 10 great-grandchildren, Justine, Jacob, Alyssa, Anthony, Jonas, Rylee, Emma, Andrew, Alexis and Keirstyn; Viola was awaiting the arrival of her eleventh great-grandchild; six siblings, Herman Gansemer, and Clarence (Darlene) Gansemer, both of Sherrill, Henry (Mary Jane) Gansemer, of Durango, Lawrence Gansemer, of Sante Fe, N.M., Darlene (Emil) Weber, of Epworth, and Marcella (Cletus) Bleile, of Dubuque; and special friend; Elaine Bechler.

Viola is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, LaVern Gansemer.

Memorials may be given to Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill Fire Department and the Dubuque Arboretum
