Warren J. Brom

BALLTOWN, Iowa --- Warren J. Brom, 71, of 676 Balltown Road, Balltown, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Balltown, with the Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Brom worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 44 years, retiring on Oct. 1, 1998.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1933 , in Dubuque, son of Edward J. and Hilda G. (Seipp) Brom. He attended school at Holy Ghost Catholic School in Dubuque. He made his First Communion on May 18, 1941, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

In 1946, he and his family moved to Ossian, Iowa were he graduated from St. Francis DeSales Catholic High School in 1951.

He entered the Navy in 1951, serving for three years on an LST transport carrier during the Korean Conflict.

He married Sue (Tarrell) Czarnecki on Nov. 16, 1996, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Balltown.

He was a charter member of the Balltown Lions Club, having held all offices and receiving the Melvin Jones Award. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Balltown.

He gave more than 27 gallons of blood to the Dubuque chapter of the American Red Cross. He also gave blood to the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center and to the Red Cross in Mission, Texas while he was there for a few months each winter.

Warren also gave of his talents in carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, especially to the Battered Women's Shelter, the Maria House and the Dubuque Mission, and in helping to build and repair houses for the less fortunate, both here and in Texas. During the summer months, he supplied Albrecht Acres in Sherrill with fresh produce from his garden.

He loved woodworking, gardening, shooting pool, golf and playing cards with his friends and family.

Surviving are his wife, Sue M. (Tarrell) Czarnecki Brom, of Balltown; children, Barb Casey, Lori (Joe) Streit and Jim (Michele) Brom, all of Dubuque, Sharon (Bruce) Schmitt, of Epworth, Debbie (Gene) Yost, of Brick, N. J., and Michael (Selena) Brom, of Gulfport, Miss.; stepchildren, Karen Czarnecki, of Charlotte, N. C., and Mark (Deb) Czarnecki, of Guttenberg; grandchildren, Amber (Steve) Juraszek and Michael Brom Jr., both of Gulfport, Tiffany and Cody Schmitt, both of Epworth, Jason (Sara) Schneider, of Poynette, Wis., Niki Schneider and Stacy Shaffer, both of Dubuque, Jocelyn (Tom) Huseman, of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Cheryl Smith and David Smith, both of Hanover, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Kaitlyn Heiderscheit, Gabrielle Montgomery, Kiernan Shaffer, Mikhayla Shaffer, Jacob Smith and two great-grandchildren expected to arrive in April; step-grandchildren, Chad, Neal and Michael Clinton, all of Guttenberg, Kristi Durr, of Dubuque, and Heidi and Justin Streit, both of Las Vegas; step-great-grandchildren, Cody and Caleb Durr, both of Dubuque; sister, Janice Brom, of Ossian, Pat( Ed) Trice, of Dubuque, and Dianne (Clarence) Kruchek, of Alden; a brother, Tony (Darrel) Brom, of Palm Springs, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, the Rev. D. Giles Brom.
