Virginia J. Sand

Virginia J. Sand, 73, of 2938 Indiana Ave., died peacefully at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

She worked as the office manager of the John C. Kaiser Co. for 15 years. She was lastly employed as a sales associate at Younkers until her retirement in October 2007.

She was born on June 26, 1934, in St. Rose, Wis., daughter of Paul E. and Florence B. (Fuller) Olson.

She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. She then attended Dubuque Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician for several years.

Virginia was a member of St. Patrick's Parish and Rosary Society, the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6 Auxiliary and was formerly a Girl Scout leader with the Little Cloud Girl Scout Council. She also was a member of the TOPS Club for many years.

Virginia started the school cafeteria at St. Anthony's in 1967.

Virginia's greatest joy was to be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter, Constance J. "Connie" (John) Meyer, of Garland, Utah; a son, Christopher J. (Nickolet J.) Sand, of Muscatine, Iowa; four grandchildren, Paul M. (Bridget) Bartlett, Matthew A. (Sharon) Bartlett, Emma S. Sand and Esabelle C. Sand, all of Dubuque; two great-grandsons, Dalton M. Bartlett and Aiden M. Bartlett; two sisters, Irene Stanley, of Rockford, Ill., and Pauline Halstead, of Galena, Ill.; two brothers, Donald (Corinne) Meyer, of Malad, Idaho, and Robert (Marilyn) Meyer, of Garland; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers-in-law, Jim Halstead and Chuck Stanley.

The family would like to thank Leone Hoefflin, Virginia's lifelong friend with whom she resided, and Dr. Runde for their care and concern for Virginia.
